Are these 5 myths stopping you from going on a yoga retreat?

Yoga retreats have a reputation, and not always an accurate one. Maybe you think they’re only for ultra-flexible yogis who can hold a handstand for five minutes straight. Or perhaps you picture a rigid schedule of 5am wake-up calls, silent meals and endless hours of meditation. Or you just assume they’re a luxury reserved for those with deep pockets.

These misconceptions stop so many people from experiencing the deep, life-changing benefits that a yoga retreat offers  beyond the yoga mat and into the heart of an inspiring community.

So let’s set the record straight and dive into the truth about yoga retreats.

Myth 1: "You have to be an experienced yogi"

Nope. Not even a little. Many retreats welcome complete beginners, and the focus is often on personal growth rather than nailing a perfect downward dog. Whether you’re new to yoga or have been practicing for years, a retreat offers the space to deepen your connection with yourself at your own pace. Just ask Paula, who was a beginner when she joined my Immerse in Ibiza retreat in 2024:

“I'm not very experienced at yoga but at no point did I feel that it was too fast or too difficult for me because Nicole is an excellent teacher and guide. Everyone was given the opportunity to progress at their own pace and there were variations and adjustments available at every turn. I always felt I was learning and being encouraged to try new things without being pushed beyond what I was capable of or felt comfortable with.”

Myth 2: "It’s just about yoga"

While yoga is part of the experience, retreats are designed to nourish every part of you. Think breathtaking locations, delicious food, mindful activities and a chance to step away from the noise of daily life. Expect laughter, connection and moments of pure joy alongside the asanas. But don’t take my word for it one retreat guest shared this feedback about their experience:

“The rest of the week was filled with swimming/reading/relaxing by the pool, the steam room, the sauna and taking advantage of the therapist with heavenly massages. One day a hike was organised, with spectacular views followed by a picnic by the lake followed by swimming and paddleboarding! Another day, a trip on the train to Malaga was enjoyed by all.”

Myth 3: "You have to follow a strict schedule"

There’s no retreat police. While there is a schedule to help structure your time, you’re not forced to do anything. Want to skip a morning class for extra sleep? Go for it. Prefer to lounge in a hammock instead of joining a group hike? Your retreat, your choice. The idea is to recharge, not to add stress. Eleonora, who attended a Breathe With Ease retreat in Ibiza, reflects:

“I needed time to rest, and there was plenty. But I also thought there was a perfect balance of activities and a chance to connect with each other too.”

Myth 4: "Yoga retreats are just a luxury vacation"

Sure, a retreat might involve a dreamy location and delicious meals, but it’s not just about indulgence. It’s an investment in yourself. The experience helps reset your mind, body and soul in ways that last far beyond the retreat itself. Many attendees leave with a fresh perspective, new friendships and a deeper connection to themselves. Just ask Janette, who attended a Breathe With Ease retreat in Ibiza:

“The main thing I've taken away from the retreat is a lifestyle change, like daily gratitude journaling, connecting with other women and trying new things like your Silent Disco Yoga events on the beach!”

Myth 5: "They’re too expensive"

Retreats come in all shapes, sizes and price points. Some are all-inclusive, while others allow you to tailor the experience to your budget. Plus, when you consider what you get  accommodation, meals, guided sessions and a transformative experience  the value is undeniable. This retreat guest wasn’t worried about the price, she was ready to book again!

“I would highly recommend anyone to go on a retreat with Nicole you will not regret it! I have the best memories and have made new friendships from the trip. Already thinking about booking my next one and I’ve only been back a couple of days!”

So, if you’ve ever thought about going on a yoga retreat but hesitated, consider this your sign. You don’t need to be an expert, follow a rigid schedule, or break the bank. All you need is an open heart and a willingness to step into an experience that might just change your life.

P.S. As I write this, there are still spaces available on two incredible retreats: Women’s only in Ibiza, September 2025 and mixed gender in Morocco, February 2026. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this transformative experience!
